June 2021: Learning to Accept Our Bodies

This week concludes our month discussing body image and I have to say — it was powerful. We had four exceptional guests this month, Rachel Onefater, Liz Schlyer, Dr. Mark Covington-Booth, and Darr Jenkins + all of our community episode letter writers! Our guests this month brought such unique perspectives to body image and we appreciate them all so much.

If you haven’t had a chance to listen to one of our five podcasts on body image, head to the links below:

Body Image Episode 1: “Joyful Movement, Body Image, & Trigger Warnings”— On this episode of F*ck Wellness, Mallory, Makena, and Lara check in on where they're at with body image, especially with Lara exiting college athletics and the summertime quickly approaching. The group talks about trigger warnings (inspired by Kenzie Brenna's podcast episode), navigating the discomfort of listening to your body, and how finding joyful movement isn't always as easy as it sounds.

Body Image Episode 2: “The Ebb & Flow of Body Image with Rachel Onefater” — On this episode of F*ck Wellness, Lara, Mallory, and Makena talk to Rachel Onefater, founder of Bondfire Co., a community for people looking to explore themselves through the different dimensions of wellness. Rachel talks about growing up as a first generation immigrant from Eastern Europe, why it’s important to find a community of belonging, and the process of launching her brand new business! To stay updated on Bondfire’s free events and upcoming launch, follow Bondfire Co. and Rachel at @bondfireco.

Body Image Episode 3: “The Impact of Competitive Sports on Body Image with Liz Schlyer” — On this episode of F*ck Wellness, Lara and Mallory talk to Liz Schlyer about finding her way in the world after 6 years of competitive rowing. Liz tells the story of participating in light-weight rowing in high school — an environment that implicitly encouraged her to lose weight, count calories, and over-exercise to make the required weight. The group talks about what athletics programs can do to help athletes with body image concerns and disordered behaviors.

Body Image Episode 4: “Navigating Labels, Body Image, and Social Pressure in the LGBTQ+ Community” — On this episode of F*ck Wellness, Mal, Lara, & Makena had the pleasure of talking to Darr Jenkins and Dr. Mark Covington-Booth about body image in the LGBTQ+ community. Both men share their experiences navigating labels, restrictive categories, and social pressure while also trying to understand their bodies and their place in the world. The group talks about how unlearning shame, seeking self-knowledge, and questioning your goals can help you get back in touch with your needs and body. Hear more from our guests at @darr.darr.jenkins and @drcovimc9.

Body Image Episode 5: “Community Series #3: Love Letters to Our Bodies” — What would you say to your body if you could write it a letter? That’s the question we posed for this community episode. The resulting letters were emotional, vulnerable, and honest. Thank you to the listeners who submitted their letters. These episodes are not possible without you.
